Recruiting on the Web : Smart Strategies for Finding the Perfect Candidate
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Trade (23 December, 2002)
Author: Michael Foster
Average review score:

Recruiter's Web Bible
This book is terrific. Even with years of recruiting experience and a strong capability using the Web, I benefited from this systematic, comprehensive, detailed and up-to-date review of how to use the Web for attracting and finding the right candidates. It is easy to read, yet packed with great information that is well-organized and easy to access for reference. I highly recommend this book for company recruiters as well as outside recruiting firms and researchers.

Comprehensive, Thought-Provoking Resource
Recruiting top talent has always been an important objective for employers. Over the past few years, we have not seen the competitive intensity in recruiting that we saw in the go-go years of the late 1990s because of the slowed economy. This quieter period has given technologists and strategists a chance to catch up, to develop new approaches, to refine new systems. The new designs for attracting preferred candidates were not even available a few years ago; now they will be essential for employers desiring to find, attract, and hire the best talent to achieve their objectives.

Finding applicants through newspaper advertising will be with us for a while, for some jobs. Even some of those jobs are now offered through major job boards. For the positions beyond low-skilled welders, fast-food burger flippers, and convenience store clerks, employers will increasingly use the internet to recruit. This shift shatters the myth that hiring is local; the web is world-wide. Recruiting is global.

OK, with this historical and future-focused concept in mind, how do we do this on-line recruiting? Foster's book tells us-step by step at a strategic level and at a tactical level. It is not a book for webmasters, recruiting site developers, or code programmers. This book delivers on the higher levels, providing company owners, executives, and managers a valuable insight into what needs to be done and why. Human resource executives will find this volume very helpful. Some HR managers will find it a great tool to open deeper discussion with their superiors; others will find it more valuable in their efforts to understand where their leaders are trying to go.

The book begins, appropriately, with some of the "big picture" of recruiting, then turns to the use of the internet. In Chapter 1, there is a list of stages to the process of e-recruiting: recruit your friends, create or enhance your organization's recruiting web site, attract the best candidates, find passive candidates, and assess your applicants. The organization of the book is different, which may throw off a reader expecting an expansion of the five stages. Foster explores various aspects of the recruiting website in Part Two, but Part Three is titled Advertise Your Job Openings. Part Four is Searching for Passive Candidates, but there is not a separate section on assessing applicants-which will be an increasingly important aspect of e-recruiting. You'll find a tremendous amount of valuable insight in these pages.

The book is seasoned with a wide range of resources, mostly presented (understandably) as website addresses. Some I recognized, others I'd heard of, and there were still some the author missed (like www.....com for recruiting communities); but, this is a rapidly-changing field. Many readers will find themselves a bit overwhelmed and confused as they read this book. So much information all at once! Yes, that's the reality; and it's a good lesson. Read the book cover to cover, then go back with a highlighter and a pad (or note-taking computer file) to design the right strategy for your company. You'll be reading about cutting-edge ideas and resources, so don't expect to grasp it all right away. Commentary on trends and processes is well interwoven with things to do. Expect to be inspired, stimulated, and fully-loaded with work to do.

Great new ideas in this book
I attended AIRS classes several years ago and they changed the way I recruit and how I use the Internet. This book covers even more territory than the classes I attended, and has opened my eyes in new ways again. My company uses newspapers, job boards and job fairs to recruit, but there's no question we get the best candidates when we use AIRS techniques. AIRS is definitely the leader in this field, and seems to keep coming back with fresh new ideas. Highly recommended for anyone in recruiting or HR.

Jamaica and Me: The Story of an Unusual Friendship
Published in Hardcover by Random House (June, 1998)
Author: Linda Atkins
Average review score:

Moving and insightful!
Linda Atkins' account of her friendship with a young, deserted girl, abandoned by her mother and lost in the 'system', clearly illustrates the harsh realities thousands of children in this country face every day, the inadequacies of the child welfare system and the seemingly hopeless struggle to find a solution to these problems. Yet, it is also a story about hope, friendship, endurance, spirit and growth.
This book will hopefully inspire others to take action and contribute to "undoing what has been done" to these children.
One organization through which you can effectively speak up for abused and neglected children is CASA

Excellent
An excellent book - I could LITERALY not put it down. A wonderful story of the relationship between a woman and a lost child. I want to read more and there's no more pages!

A haunting, beautifully told memoir.
I first picked up "Jamaica and me" in Barnes and Noble, while searching for a book to possibly convert into a screenplay. As I read the first chapter, I was captivated by Linda's (the author) discriptive and insightful writing. "Jamaica and me" is a riveting memoir filled with hope, sorrow, and brutal realities. Currently I'm working on the screenplay and would greatly appreciate any information on how to get in contact with Linda Atkins.

Though individual pieces may seem forbidding, this collection coheres - with story after story giving you the momentum to read on. By the end, you reach short pieces that actually teach you how to live - something stories and memoirs rarely achieve, even for those of us who consider ourselves serious and openhearted readers. Here is an anthology for the long haul.

A Place to Call Home
This is such an awesome book! I recommend it to young adults everywhere!

A place to call home
I thought this book was a exciting book. It was very interesting. I liked this book because it was real detailed and it never had a point in the book where it went on forever. The suspence of the book built up like steps and the higher you go the more exciting it was. The book was about a girl named Anna who grew up with a mother who beat her every time she lost her temper. Anna is in high school and has learned how to take care of her younger brother and sister. Anna's mom keeps running away, leaving Anna with her little sister and brother by themselves until their mom comes home. But Anna is stuck in a sticky situation when her mother never comes home again.

This book has it's ups and downs. The beginning is exciting, but the end is sad. It's only about one third of the book is sad so don't let that bother you. I would highly recommend this book as one of my favorite books.

A Place to Call Home
The O'Dell children are left alone when things get too much to handle for their mother. So their mother just takes off. Fifteen-year-old Anna has now learned to take care of her five-year-old sister Mandy, and her seven-month-old brother Casey. Anna tries to hide, and not let anyone know that mother is gone. Anna's goal is to keep the three of them together, but she has to make tough decisions. This is Anna's story. I enjoyed this book because, I would never want to stop. It just kept getting good.

Oh man is this good!
This is the best book ever.Alan Dean Foster did a perfect job with this book!I read like mad,and so I'd had no books I hadn't read, save for Spellsinger ,which jumped at me from the shelf. This book rocks!

This book Rocks
Read it for the story, read it again for the enjoyment, and you will read it a third time for the learning.

Spellbinding - Spellsinger
Wow, Alan Dean Foster has done well here. The book has a enthraling and yet humorus storyline in which animals who walk and talk (AND cast spells!) Seem science fact rather than fiction. Without spoiling too much you have to read this book just to see Falameezar. (I think that's how it's spelt!) The best character I've ever come across in any novel ever. Well worth reading and well worth Getting the series.

Wounded Innocents: The Real Victims of the War Against Child Abuse
Published in Paperback by Prometheus Books (February, 1995)
Author: Richard Wexler
Average review score:

Real Eye Opener About Child Protection Services
With My husband we agreed that if we have read this book before we have any children this book could have changed our mind to raise a family in this continent. Unfortunately we haven't read this book and right now we are falsely accused of child abuse of our three sons age 9-9-2. Although we live in Canada the information presented in the book is very informative to handle the Child Protective Services and there case workers. Our children are in foster care right now because we don't have any family here who could have taken them into there homes. We are from Hungary. I recommend this book to all parents who is planning to raise a family or who already has a family, and most of all the case workers of the child protection services.

how will history judge our age?
wexler's book should be required reading. i wish i could get "dr" laura to read this book. it would certainly give her pause before saying kids are better off in foster care or an institution than with their parents... the situation in our nation with respect to child protection is tragic. the power of these programs to act is beyond the power granted in the constitution to our police. no search warrent is needed. a child can be taken with notifying the parents, without review. the records are sealed. wexler has done a service by writing this book. recommended highly.

If you care about our children or our society you must read.
I have been involved with various aspects of the child protective service system for over 25 years. Based on my own experience, this book does not exaggerate the appalling dangers our families and children face at the hands of these systems. I found the accounts, chilling as they are, to be very accurate reflections of what I know to be everyday occurances in our child welfare system. This author has examined the data and the facts and done the homework that all of us should be doing.

Two Suns in the Sky
Published in Paperback by Puffin (November, 2001)
Author: Miriam Bat-Ami
Average review score:

Reveiw of Suns in the Sky
Suns in the Sky" by Miriam Bat-Ami is an exceptional novel. It is painfully effective in portraying the whirlwind of hope and agony that was World War II. The book features Chris Cook, an American teenager, and her romance with Yugoslavian Jew Adam Bornstein. Adam and his family are being housed by the government in Chris's town, Oswego, NY. The young couple struggles to maintain their relationship despite the fierce oppostition of Chris's prejudiced father.
This book is definitely a worthwile read. The topic is unusual and intriguing. Not many books are published about refugee camps in America. The character's lifestyles contrast greatly from modern ways of life, making the content fresh, educational, and full of charm. The content is in turns appealing and appaling, and will greatly enrich the reader. World War two is a poignant, fascinating period thatis necessary to read and learn about.
One downside to this book is the style in which it was conveyed. The author chose to present several stories at once, and the fashion in which it switches narrators and time periods can be confusing. However, this aspect of the book adds appeal. Its very interesting to the different perspectives of the characters. There is also some disturbing material included in the book, which some readers might find objectionable. However, I personally feel that this feature is a necessary part of the story. Overall, this remarkable book is sure to be a charmer for all ages.

Two Suns in the Sky
This book was very good. Its title is Two Suns in the Sky and the authors name is Miriam Bat-Ami. This book involves a young boy and a young girl that meet each other from a refugee camp. Adam is the boy who came from Yougoslavia on a ship to come to America to be free from the war that has been going on. Christine Cook who is the girl that has lived in America her whole life begins to fall inl ove with Adam. I would reccomend this book to anyone who enjoys a story with a little romance in it and in the same timeinformation about a war that is going on in the story and how people from Yougoslavia and other places come to America to be free from the war. I liked this book a lot and I hope i can find more books by this came author to read in the future. Now i am a little more consiuos on how refugees were treated and how other people did not like them just because they were sent to America to be free and safe form the war and at the same time some of their family members are fighting over in their country to make their country independent and free like America. I enjoyed this book and I would read another Holocaust book in the future.

It's more like Seven Stars!
The only thing I can say is Wow! Everything is wonderful and Bat-Ami is an exceptional authoress! It is like a modern day version of Romeo and Juliet, even better in some aspects! Everything seems so real and that it could have really happened! Some parts are sad, while others uplifting. Shows the true meaning, emotions, and just plain everything about a true love story! There are also some good facts about WWII, but that's not really why I read the book. The plot entrigued me. The end left me begging for more. So, if your out there reading somewhere Bat-Ami, you are a WONDERFUL AUTHORESS!

Esther's Story
Published in Paperback by Mulberry Books (January, 1998)
Authors: Diane Wolkstein and Juan Wijngaard
Average review score:

Esther
I like this book of Esther because it is all what God knew what was going to happen. My first favorite part is when the king crowned Esther Queen of Persia. That was God's plan. Later, a man named Haman wanted all the Jews killed. God wanted Esther to save her people. My second favorite part is when Esther shows up to the king uninvited. Esther had the courage to do that. But, will Esther save her people in time? Read this book to find out.

Esthers Story
Esther's Uncle Mordecai is the gate keeper. He raised Esther from a baby. My favorite part of the story is when Esther becomes queen of Persia. My favorite part of the story is when he laughed. When he was done laughing, he said "Esther, you are now queen of ersia". I like the book Esther because it is taken from the Bible. The comments are the same as in the Bible. If you really like the Bible story, I insist that you read this book!

esther's story
Esther was an ok book. It is easy to read. It was about
this girl named Esther and how she became a queen and
saved her people. I recommend this book to anyone.

The God-Mind Connection
Published in Paperback by Uni Sun (June, 1986)
Author: Jean K. Foster
Average review score:

This book gives meaning to the word Spirituality
I have been on my spiritual path for many years. This book showed the way in which a person can connect with their own spirituality and make sense of it. Wonderful ways to make your connection and work on your spiritual growth are within the book. The author gave insight into her own struggles and growth in finding her own spirituality. I have read this book several times and highly recommend it. A must for the serious person on their spiritual path.

Truly empowering, uplifting and inspirational ! A MUST read!
The God-Mind Connection ( and the books which follow in the the trilogy) outline for us how to achieve all that we want - both spiritually AND materially.( No, they are NOT mutually exclusive!!) How to achieve true success and real peace of mind. The most amazing thing is that it is all available to us simply for the asking - no special exercises, no sacrifices. AND IT WORKS!!! This is a must read if you want to know how to have everything you ever wanted for yourself and for those you love. And you'll want to give a copy to everyone you care about, too!

I highly recommend this book!
I first read this book several years ago, and I credit it with helping me find a focus for my spiritual yearnings. It is well-written, in plain, easily understood language, with practical suggestions and exercises for the individual to learn to get in touch with their Source Within. The author shares some of her own journey, which helped me gain deeper insight to the wisdom given forth by those designated as The Brotherhood. This wisdom is practical and applicable to everyday living. As a practicing holistic consultant, I utilize many of the concepts and exercises in this book with clients in helping them learn to develop their own Connection Within.

The Things I Want Most: The Extraordinary Story of a Boy's Journey to a Family of His Own
Published in Hardcover by Bantam Doubleday Dell Pub (Trd) (01 September, 1998)
Author: Richard F. Miniter
Average review score:

Great story, tremendous strength
An uplifting account of one boy's struggle to overcome a disadvantaged life. If you liked this, definitely check out "The Wanderer" by Ken Grant of Massachusetts (1993)

Best of its kind I have ever read
This book is the best personal account of fostering/adopting an older child that I have ever read. It is a natural for a "made for TV" movie, with its dramatic story, picturesque setting, and cast of "characters." I laughed, I cried, I sobbed. In Miniter and his wife, we see the mixture of naivete/ignorance, denial, and audacity that goes into the decision to bring a "disturbed" youngster into one's family. The book also reflects the reality that formal treatment plans are limited (and sometimes unrealistic) and that "real life"-- honest emotions and reactions, normal expectations, natural consequences-- can be a strong motivator in turning around dysfunctional behavior. To the reader who is NOT an experienced foster/adoptive parent, I would offer a few minor cautions: 1) Miniter makes no mention of receiving any kind of training before taking the boy into his family. If that was indeed the case, that's a major flaw in the "Harbor" program. Prospective foster and adoptive parents of kids in the child welfare system should receive fairly extensive training in areas such as what to expect when the children come into your home, how the system (and particular agency) works, and how to manage difficult behavior. 2) Miniter would probably be one of the first to point out that this book is not a blueprint for others but is instead ONE case study, of ONE youngster, in ONE family. The Ministers' experience notwithstanding, psychotropic medication and/or psychotherapy are important-- if not essential-- components in some youngsters' healing, and respite care and parent support groups can be lifesavers for some "therapeutic" parents. 3) Miniter says he ignored some of the safety precautions recommended by his agency, and suggested that (hunting) guns were readily accessible in his home. Having weapons easily available in ANY home with kids (even "normal" children!) is foolhardy, and most agencies REQUIRE pretty sensible safety precautions.

A book that will touch your heart...
This book teaches many lessons. First and foremost that the husband-wife relationship plays such a major role in raising children, and it showed in this book. The relationship between Rich and Sue is an admirable one, one that not is not so common after so many years of marriage. With that bond of love, they raised a house full of kids and later in life, were able to take on one more kid, very different from their own. They gave it 1000% and stuck with it through thick and thin. What they did for "Mike" is untouchable, precious and blessed. God Bless the Miniters and the best of luck to "Mike" in his future endeavors to become a chef.........This book more than once will put a lump in your throat and a tear or two in your eye...To learn more about children, about sacrifices, about life, you must read this beautiful story !!
